As you can see this classic Olds has had an unfortunate encounter with a can opener. With this type of damage the sheet metal stretches a lot especially around the hole. Then when you weld the hole shut and hammer out the crease it stretches even more. This creates a condition known as an “oil can”. The metal popes in and out like the side of a tin oil can, so it is ether out to far, or in too far. To repair the door I had to heat shrink the panel back into it original position.
The door had old damage and a lot of plastic filler on it before this most recent damage. Because of this it was important to not over work (Work Hardening) the metal which can cause the metal to crack like a sheet of glass a year or two after the repair is completed.
After welding the hole shut and working the crease I applied lead filler. This old school method of filling imperfections last forever.
